10 questions for Edwin Toh:

  • What did you do before becoming a designer/developer?

Aside from working in a chocolate factory as a production worker part time, I haven't really had another job. I was a web designer before making the switch to be a pure frontend developer. Building websites was pretty much the only thing I ever wanted to do since I was 16.

  • Where do you turn for inspiration?

Can I say the internet? I look at how other designers/developers deal with transitions, animations and little UX/UI tidbits. I also follow a lot of great developers and designers on Twitter.

  • Which are your favorite studios, designers or agencies?

As of right now, Kinetic and Firstborn. Both really great agencies I have had the privilege to work for. They have a really great culture which I want to recreate in my own agency.

  • Who do you side with: Team Mac or Team PC?

I'm a Mac user now after switching from PC about 7 years ago. I would say I'm on neither's side. I switched to Mac in the beginning because a lot of designers I work with work on the Mac and after passing files to me, there were a lot of font problems.

  • Is your city a good place for designers?

In recent years, a lot of great design agencies are starting to make a name for themselves and do really great work. The government has also tried its best to bring in good exhibitions and create nice spaces for these exhibitions. It's an exciting time to be in Singapore.

  • Which technologies are you excited about?

Today, I have been playing with the Oculus Rift and the Leap Motion Controller for a while now. I'm very interested to get a pair of Google Glass myself and see how it changes my habits and what I can create for it.

  • How many hours do you work each week?

    I would say around 70?

  • Do you listen to music while you work? Describe your playlist.

Nope. I'm one of the few who find music to be distracting.

  • What is your favorite book?

Today, my favourite book is Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson.

  • What is your favorite sport?

Football, not the american one. ;)
