Luciano Borromei

I am co-founder and director of Ingamana, an interactive design and development studio in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

My interests are geared towards the conceptualization and implementation of interfaces and web / mobile applications. I also serve as instructor of Mobile Web Development, WPO and UX-related workshops for school students and private companies.
During the last 12 years I had the privilege of working, always digital, with global brands and clients such as Prada, Sony, Honda, Samsung, Nike, Toyota, Samsonite and Disney Channel.
The work we produce at Ingamana has been recognized by Awwwards, The FWA, Webby Awards, Lovie Awards and Communications & Arts, among others.

Questions for Luciano Borromei:

  • What did you do before becoming a developer?

I did tons of travels -and shootings- to the Puna (Cordillera de los Andes`s deserts) with Juan Pablo, my Ingamana partner and brother. Besides, I always played music, which I still do at dosastronautas.com.ar.

  • Where do you turn for inspiration?

Besides contemplation and research, I see inspiration as the result of a process that requires mostly action and time. For me there is no magic: dedication is the keyword.

  • Which are your favorite studios, designers or agencies?

David Navarro, Claudio Guglieri, Haraldur Thorleifsson, Anton Reponnen, Wim Bruyninckx, Aaron Gustafson, César Brie, Hello Monday, Good Morning, Hey Days, F-i, Unit9, Filament Group and, of course, Ingamana.

  • Is your city a good place for designers?

Yes, I think both Buenos Aires and Bahía Blanca are great places for designers.

  • Which technologies are you excited about?

I am interested in web browsers progress more than anything. In terms of workflow I would mention CSS preprocessors and JavaScript MV*.

  • Do you listen to music while you work? Describe your playlist.

Most of the time I prefer silence. Sometimes I like listening to quiet instrumental music or turning on some live sports event and just play it on the background.

  • Have you always had a keen interest in technology since childhood? What sparked your interest?

I always had computers around, but what really grabbed me was the internet and Joshua Davis’s Praystation.

  • As a developer, where do you get your inspiration from?

Besides the usual spots like Awwwards, The FWA or Dribbble, following the right people on Twitter is the best way I found to keep updated about new projects, tools and libraries. I guess I should also mention browser´s web inspectors.

  • What essential items are in your developer toolbox?

Sublime Text Editor, Chrome extensions, Google Drive, GitHub, devices and browsers for testing.

  • What programming languages do you use? Which did you learn first?

HTML/CSS/JS. I started with PHP, MySQL and ActionScript.

  • Where do you see the industry in 5 years?

Five years ago there was no iPad and Android was just emerging, so it´s really hard for me to think that far ahead...
Lately I got impressed by developed countries broadband plans for the next years. That huge speed and transfer capacity will impact directly our industry, as probably will do on almost all the others.
Despite the fact that the Internet will be more geographically dispersed, the gap in terms of broadband and hardware between central and peripheral countries -and even inside the same country- will widen. We can infer then that a Progressive Enhancement´s approach should keep being a must in order to privilege information and, when possible, presentation.
Since probably almost any surface will become a display, we might really have to think the Internet as a network of things (IoT) and services. Digital payments and mobile wallet usage will certainly keep growing, as wearables will become more and more common.

  • Are you working on any personal projects?

We expect to be working shortly on a new personal project with our partner in crime David Navarro.
