We recently discovered in our interview with Rachel Andrew the interesting series of minibooks “Pocket Guides Series” from fivesimplesteps.com.These eBooks cover specific aspects of web design. They are quick and efficient guides for a first encounter or to use as a fast manual. Very comfortable, and “for the price of a coffee” at just £2.00 per digital copy in the usual formats like pdf, epub and mobi. The titles available at the moment are “Creating Symbol Fonts” by Brian Suda y “CSS3 layout modules” by Rachel Andrew.
- In “Creating Symbol Fonts” we have a general overview of the appropriate use of symbol fonts, we learn how to create our own custom symbol fonts and technical issues are covered such as formats, the way to embed them into HTML and other considerations about typography on the web and useful resources to go deeper into the subject.
- The second book, “CSS3 layout modules”, is an excellent practical example to get an overview of the available Layout modules in CSS3 specification. In the first chapter we have a few practical examples of Multicolumn layout which allow us to experiment with its interesting properties such as column-count, column-gap, column-rule. The following chapters discuss CSS flexible box layout, CSS grid layout, CSS regions and CSS exclusions.
For now you can get the two titles we mentioned. From February, “The Craft of Words” by The Standardistas and “Psychology for Designers” by Joe Leech will be available, to be followed later by other interesting topics written by experts in the sector. We’ll keep you informed!
