Black is usually associated with concepts and emotions such as elegance, sophistication, formality, strength, mystery, power, sexuality, formality, wealth, fear, evil, depth, style, sadness, anonymity and death (in western cultures). White and black combination has the biggest visual contrast, this can be used to portray opposite concepts such as day & night or Good vs. Evil.

Black is not used as background color very often in rich text websites. Black is heavier than any other color and it gives a feeling of weight to websites that can look very striking. It is a powerful color, but it can also be overwhelming when used in excess. Black is a great color for portfolio websites as it provides a neutral background which allows other elements like photographs or illustrations to stand out and makes the viewer focus on the artwork.

Black is not a color, but the lack of all colors and light, essentially making it the ultimate non-color. Contrary to white, that tends to reflect color, black will absorb and dilute all colors around it, so secondary colors of a black website must be chosen carefully. Black websites have a lot of attitude. Black can make luminous and vibrant colors like bright shades of red, blue or green really really stand out. It can also work well with dark colors, but that's a tricky combination as the colors could merge together and make the design lose readability, in this case the use of textures can help differentiate two similar colors
