Interview with Sebastian Deutsch from 9 Elements

Article by Awwwards Team in News - May 24
We had the pleasure of asking Sebastian Deutsch, one of the founders of 9 Elements, a few questions. We leave you with the interview. Enjoy! QuestionAwwwards: Please tell us a little bit about yourself: who are you, where do you come from and where are you going? Sebastian: Hi I'm Sebastian! I'm one of the founders of 9elements, a small software boutique from Germany. I love to code in shiny things using HTML5 and CoffeeScript. I'm also hacking some Objective-C and Cocoa on Watchlater. QuestionAwww: What did you do before becoming a designer/developer? Sebastian: I started programming as a child. I really loved the video games in those arcades and from that day I wanted to be a programmer too and create one of those games. Since then I have seen every major operating system and many, many programming languages. But in the end I love the web the most - it's awesome that you can launch things that everyone in the world can see and use. 9elements started when Eray and me studied computer science at the TU Dortmund. QuestionAwww:  In your opinion, which is the future of the Web? (HTML5, Responsive Design, Flash, Mobile...) Sebastian: In the eyes of the most developers mobile is done - but I don't think so. In my opinion feature phones will really loose their market share and smart phones will really hit the mainstream. Furthermore Apple and Google are taking TV. So everyone be prepared to deal with even more display, resolution and device fragmentation. QuestionAwww:  Where do you turn for inspiration? Sebastian: Most of the fresh stuff I get is from Twitter or Hackernews. I'm always interested in the design leveraged by development. But when I want to see some design only I would check out Design Made in Germany or Dribble. QuestionAwww:  Which are your favorite studios, designers or agencies? Sebastian: I really like HiRes and our buddies at V2A. QuestionAwww: Tell us about a unique story or funny anecdote related to your work. Sebastian: Almost 3 years ago we released a little HTML5 experiment called Canvas 9 Elements. The concept was to see what people were saying about HTML5 on Twitter while using new features like Canvas or Audio. Initially it didn't get much traction. But then it got slashdotted and from then on we had millions of visitors to this particular site. It was the best marketing for 9elements ever. So I can encourage everyone: Experiment... and release it! QuestionAwww:  Which are you for: Mac or PC? Sebastian: Mac. QuestionAwww:  Which is your favorite software? Sebastian: Currently I'm digging Sublime Text 2 - it's the best editor I've seen... QuestionAwww:  Which city do you live in? Is it a good place for designers? Sebastian: I'm living in Bochum (Ruhr Area). It's a great place to live: Many people live here, with its universities it's not that difficult to find talent and offices are cheap. I also stay in Berlin part of the year. Berlin is inspiration on steroids - but since Tech Crunch named it the Sillicon Valley of Europe, it's really hard to hire talent there. QuestionAwww:  Which technologies are you excited about? Sebastian: HTML5 of course, CoffeeScript, Backbone.js, Rails, Cocoa. Everything that's new. But I deeply hate Java - from the heart. QuestionAwww:  Tell us about your latest project. Sebastian: Our latest project is Watchlater for iOS. Basically Watchlater does for videos what InstaPaper does for text. But we also focus on video discovery. With over 5 million bookmarks in our database we have quite good content. Check it out - it's free.
