Designing for an Identity That “ShapeShifts”

Designing for an Identity That “ShapeShifts”

The Idea: Representing the Intangible.

With fromanother.love: our brand identity doesn't want to be pinned down. Anyone who's followed us long enough has seen the label keep shifting — agency, studio, collective. None fully stick.

What we do sits between commercial and artistic practice, never fully one or the other. Hard to box in. So our core visual concept is Light - swirls of it, in motion, intangible, fluid.

Light becomes the environment. As you scroll, the background shifts through colour states that carry the brand's energy without competing with the content. The foreground stays the opposite: clean, minimal, typographic.

The site at a glance.

Every effect earned its place. That ruled out anything that slides or snaps. Text surfaces through blur and fade, the way light does. Page transitions bleed and diffuse instead of cutting.

Blur and fade across footer, clients, services.

The ripple effect on project and lab thumbnails, and the fluid-like transitions between visuals, extend the same concept into interaction.

The ripple, contained inside the image through project transition.

Leaving the Method behind

“The goal was never to build something technically impressive for its own sake. It was to make something that feels right and leaves the method hidden.”

The home page background, shifting through colour states by layering videos.

People see the background transitions and the menu and assume heavy shader work. It's the cheat: videos layered with opacity and blend modes. No glassmorphism, no GLSL.

The real 3D went where it counts: the ripple, running on Three.js and React Three Fiber. The discipline wasn't building everything from scratch. It was knowing which illusions to cheat and which to build.

The same ripple in the Lab, where the experimental work lives.

Designed to Be Discovered

The showreel is embedded in the "We are an Artist-Led…" section as a small thumbnail video. Click it, the full reel expands and continues to play. We really like that kind of seamless and continuous interaction. If someone misses it, that's fine. The rest of the page should already tell you what we do. The wandering act is the fun part in walking inside a modern art museum. You don't always know what you're looking at, but the visual holds you, and the not-knowing is part of it.

The placement follows the same instinct. Team members sit diagonally, so the eye has to travel. Services and clients scroll on a curve. Brand assets turn up where you don't expect them: the menu, the Lab.

The Lab is where the duality goes literal: experimental work, no client brief, the artist half of fromanother, next to the commercial half. The site dedicates a page for this part.

Final Thought - Second Attempt.

The previous version of fromanother.love existed and did its job. But it was made before we had enough distance from the work to see it clearly, before years of client projects and craft-making had sharpened what we actually wanted to say.

So we kept what was working like the structure, removed what wasn't, and added only what we'd earned the right to add, interactions and details we could now justify rather than just desire. The process felt unusually smooth because the hardest decisions had already been made prior to the redesign.

Clarity is a slow-build resource. This site was the first time we got to show it.

Technologies

Stack. Next.js / React with Prismic as a headless CMS. Motion and 3D on GSAP, Three.js, and React Three Fiber, with the Web Animations API for finer control. Plain JS / HTML / CSS underneath

The hard part wasn't the stack — it was performance. A few things from the build:

  • The work is heavy, so load vs quality is a constant tradeoff. Our projects are visually dense, and every page balances load speed against display quality.
  • Test video platforms early. We started on Vimeo, then tested Gumlet and Mux. Each needs different delivery logic, so switching means reworking that layer.
  • The ripple and page transitions took the most optimisation. Keeping the ripple contained inside the image, not bleeding across the screen meant a lot of tuning, and a lot of bugs along the way.
  • Optimise for every device. Getting it running cleanly across phone, tablets, and desktop was its own task.
