Lukasz Gorka

I am production director and co-founder of BrightMedia, which was established in 2014. I am responsible for technical, interactive and emotional part of our realizations.

Ten years ago I was fascinated with flash technology which brought me to the digital industry. During that whole time my skills, predispositions, interests and requirements have evolved. That is why I decided to start brand new studio with my friends. It seems like it was a great decision because after just one year we were nominated for The Agency of The Year 2014. We pay a lot of attention to every single detail of our projects to reach very emotional and memorable realizations.

10 questions for Lukasz Gorka:

  • What did you do before becoming a designer?

I’m not a designer but I’ve always worked close to design. For me beautiful pictures are not enough to create a memorable project. No less important is the interaction, usability, emotions or sound design. Only all these things together can create a unique piece of work.

  • Where do you turn for inspiration?

You can find inspiration everywhere, that’s obvious. I don’t pay much attention to other sites when I’m looking for inspiration. I’d rather focus on the things that are completely unrelated to the Internet. Thanks to that you always have a fresh look at the project. As a result, I managed to create interesting and unique interactions and effects, which will stick in the minds of our potential clients and hopefully will make them hire us.

  • Which are your favorite studios, designers or agencies?

  • There are many great agencies, which I admire but my favorite definitely are: Hello Monday, stinkdigital, AQuest, Grouek and of course BrightMedia.

  • Is your city a good place for designers?

Warsaw was completely destroyed during WWII but after that it stood up and now it is the full of life metropolis. Here you can feel cultural impacts from eastern and western Europe. Although it's not easy to fall in love with this city at the first sight, each day you can find interesting places or events here. I can see that it's changing month by month. So yes, this is a really good place for all people, not only for designers.

  • Which technologies are you excited about in 2015?

It’s hard to say because there is no new breakthrough technology but for sure I’m interested in iBeacons – Bluetooth BLE technology.

  • Do you listen to music while you work? Describe your playlist.

I listen to music which doesn’t distract me while I work. Movies soundtracks are usually a good option.

  • What are you cultural influences? (Music, books, films, ideologies, etc.)

When I was young the most important thing for me was music: progressive rock mainly. Long hair, rebellion and truancy with friends was my whole life. We wanted to live under the current and different than others. I grew up with this but that time had a big impact on how I work today. The other influence on my current approach was the book “The Art of Innovation”. The prototyping and iterative design are the basis for what we do at our agency.

  • Have you got an academic background or are you self taught?

I am a software engineer which gave me a solid base and defined the direction, what I want to do in the future. But most of the tools which I’m using now, I learned myself. The industry is changing so fast that I have to learn new things almost every day. I think there is no other way to stay in this business and make interesting things.

  • What do you do in your free time?

I’m addicted to watching films and TV series. I need to limit it.

  • Where do you see the industry in 5 years?

The industry is changing so fast that it’s really hard to say how it would be in 5 years. But I think that AR/VR technology will be constantly developing and this is very interesting perspective for me.

  • Are you working on any personal projects?

Since I set up my agency there are no personal projects simply because everything I do is connected to my job, which I really love.

  • If you could give one piece of advice to newbie designers, what would it be?

Don’t be afraid to throw the finished project, a prototype of interaction or animation in the trash and start everything from the beginning :) The second idea can be much better than the first one. Keep working hard and bright ideas will come to you.
