Firstborn, an award-winning full-service interactive agency, is in the process of interviewing candidates for a full-time, on-site position of Software Engineer in our New York office.

You’ll be responsible for the server-side development of interactive projects and collaborating with a very skilled and passionate team of designers, developers and producers. You will have the chance to work on a variety of projects including (but not limited to) content management systems, web applications for desktop and mobile, games, out-of-home installations and e-commerce sites.

  • 3+ years of experience developing data-driven web applications
  • Demonstrable understanding of object-oriented programming concepts and design patterns
  • Deep understanding of at least one of the following web stacks: PHP, Apache, Zend Framework / Symfony    Java, Tomcat, Spring MVC C#, IIS, ASP.NET MVC
  • Cross-browser development using HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Design and implementation of RESTful web services
  • Database schema design and implementation skills (transactional, normalization, etc)
  • Custom CMS development and integration with established CMS platforms
  • Basic server administration and networking knowledge
  • Flexibility to adapt to client-specific infrastructure requirements
  • Experience using version control systems (SVN, GIT)
  • Solid understanding of client/server security, hashing and encryption algorithms
  • Strong communication skills, both in person and in writing
  • Ability to work within a collaborative environment wearing multiple hats


  • Mobile web, iOS and Android development experience
  • Interest in game development
  • Experience with any additional programming languages
  • Interest in physical computing and embedded systems
  • E-commerce and payment gateway integration
  • Agency work experience
