Introduction to iOS Development

Class overview:

A briskly paced course designed to teach you the essentials of programming for iOS devices, covering basic architecture of an iPhone or iPad app and the essential Apple API used. You don't need to be a code guru to learn iOS, but you should have some programming experience in a C-based language such as C, C++, Java, PHP, ActionScript 3, etc. Object oriented programming experience will be helpful. 

This class will teach you what you need to know about the Interface Builder (now part of Xcode) and iOS Simulator used for testing. You'll also learn programming patterns in Objective-C as well as the essential principles you'll need to write robust iOS code.


NOTE TO REGISTRANTS:

Participants need to bring a laptop with Xcode 4 already installed.

? Once you've registered: If your laptop runs OS X Lion or higher, you can download Xcode from the Mac App Store (recommended). If you run previous versions of OS X, you will have to download it fromhttps://developer.apple.com/downloads/


Students will learn:

  • Basic Objective-C patterns for iOS development
  • Best practices for Xcode, Apple's IDE
  • Best practices for Apple's Cocoa Touch API
  • Basic UIKit programming Level

Pre-Requisites: This is an Intermediate level course. You don't have to be able to program in your sleep, but you should have some programming experience with an object-oriented language (such as C++, Java, Python, Ruby, etc.).

iOS development requires the use of Xcode. It is necessary for participants to bring a laptop with Xcode 4 installed (available for free from the Mac App Store). In order to download Xcode, participants should be enrolled into Apple's iOS Developer Programme. Instructor: Ariel Elkin holds an MSc in Computer Science from University College London. He is a freelance iOS developer with several successful apps in the App Store, and brings direct experience in designing, developing, shipping and marketing successful apps to his courses.
